Places in Kaitaia

Places in Kaitaia

In Kakapo class we have been learning about New Zealand history. We found out that there are so many places in the Far north that are filled with lots of history. At Cape Reinga when people die their spirits go to the tip of New Zealand where the two oceans meet (Tasman and Pacific) You can also feel the spirits there as well. It is also a place that I highly recommend you visit if you ever come here.
A part of our local history is the Kauri Gum Diggers and how they mined up all the gum. If you go to Te Ahu as well you will see a Pou that represents Gum Diggers. They are very special to me because great great great great grandfather was a Gum Digger.

When we learned about NZ History I liked learning about Young Nicks Head which has heaps of history behind it. It is the place where Captain Cook first sailed to New Zealand.
Our history learning was integrated into our learning contracts - We learned lots.  Whats your favourite place in NZ?

Blog post on Fiords and sounds

Blog Post On Fjords And Sounds
By Poppy

This week has been great. I have been learning about Fjords and sounds and how many facts there are. It turns out there are heaps! Did you know that Fjord land has the rarest type of coral the black coral. It also the home to marine life such as pods of bottle nose dolphins and fish in the reefs! There is also Milford sound which is home to Kea, Kiwi, and Kakapo! The sounds like Milford sound is like a little inlet and just a little bigger than a bay and a Fjord is a little inlet that was formed by a glacier and it is very steep. We are having so much fun learning about these awesome places and we hope there are many more facts to discover!

What do you know about Fjords

Blog Post on our survival book

At the moment we are reading a book called Cuz. It is by a New Zealand author and it is about a boy called River with his cousin Huia. River is fed up because he does not know much Maori but Huia does. River thinks she is a know-it-all. So far they have been on a fishing boat and catching all sorts of fish but then suddenly a gas explosion goes off and Huia's father may have died but they are sure he was dead when the explosion went off. Now they are on a trip to get across the mountains and get home. We are reading this book because of we are going on camp soon and we will be having our survival skills put to the test. We all can not wait for camp and the adventures ahead.
